Rule: net double bogey

Worked example

A handicap index of 14.2 from a tee with a slope of 132, a course rating of 72.2 and a par of 72 plays off 17; a gross of 96 becomes an adjusted gross score of 93 after 2 holes are capped at net double bogey.

  1. 14.2 × (132 ÷ 113) = 16.588
  2. 16.588 + (72.2 − 72) = 16.788

How it is calculated

Your Course Handicap sets the strokes you receive on each hole by stroke index. Net double bogey on a hole is par + 2 + those strokes: an 18 handicap on a par 4 with one stroke caps at 7. Any hole above its cap is reduced to it. The adjusted gross is the sum, and it can be lower than the card but never higher. That number, not the raw gross, feeds the Score Differential. Parful applies net double bogey as a cap rule on outings that use it.

When it does not apply

  • Net double bogey uses your COURSE Handicap strokes, not a format allowance. It is a handicap-posting rule, not a competition rule.
  • A pickup on a disaster hole records exactly the cap, never an estimate.
  • On Parful, club rounds are currently recorded with the raw gross as the adjusted gross. This calculator shows what the WHS-compliant figure would be.

Questions

Why can I pick up on a bad hole?

Because once you are above net double bogey the hole counts the same for handicap however many more you take. Pick up, write down the cap, move on.

Does this change my competition score?

No. It changes only the score posted for handicap. In the competition you count what you actually took, unless the competition itself runs a cap rule.

What replaced Equitable Stroke Control?

This did, in January 2020. ESC capped the whole card at one number by Course Handicap band; net double bogey moves hole by hole with par and strokes.
