Or

StrokesExample

24

A playing handicap of 24 receives 1 stroke on every hole and an extra stroke on the 6 holes with stroke index 1 to 6.

Playing Handicap:
24
Stroke index:
18 entered
How it was calculated
  1. 24 over 18 holes: 1 on every hole, then 6 more on stroke index 1 to 6
  2. hardest hole first, so stroke index 1 is always the first to receive one

Rule: stroke index

Worked example

A playing handicap of 24 receives 1 stroke on every hole and an extra stroke on the 6 holes with stroke index 1 to 6.

  1. 24 over 18 holes: 1 on every hole, then 6 more on stroke index 1 to 6
  2. hardest hole first, so stroke index 1 is always the first to receive one

How it is calculated

Stroke index 1 is the hardest hole and the first to receive a stroke. A Playing Handicap of 12 gets one stroke on stroke index 1 to 12. Above the hole count the allocation wraps: every hole takes one stroke before any hole takes a second, so 24 is one everywhere plus a second on index 1 to 6. A plus handicap works in reverse, giving strokes back on the hardest holes first. Parful allocates strokes with exactly this rule on every card.

When it does not apply

  • Enter your PLAYING Handicap, after the format allowance, not your index or Course Handicap.
  • Nine holes wrap the same way over nine: a 12 over nine is one everywhere plus a second on the three lowest indexes.

Questions

Why does stroke index 1 get the first stroke?

Because it is the hole where the handicap golfer most needs help. The index ranks holes by how much they separate a scratch player from a bogey golfer.

What happens above 36?

Two strokes on every hole, then a third on the lowest indexes. The wrap continues as far as the handicap goes.
