Worked example

A handicap index of 14.2 from a tee with a slope of 132, a course rating of 72.2 and a par of 72 plays off 17 and scores 36 Stableford points from a gross of 89 over 18 holes.

  1. 14.2 × (132 ÷ 113) = 16.588
  2. 16.588 + (72.2 − 72) = 16.788
  3. rounds to 17
  4. 17 strokes fall on the 17 holes with the lowest stroke index
  5. each hole: net score − par → points from the Stableford table
  6. 18 of 18 holes played: 36 points (36 is playing to handicap)

How it is calculated

Your Playing Handicap is spread across the holes by stroke index, hardest hole first, wrapping round for handicaps above the hole count. On each hole, net score is gross minus the strokes you receive there, and points come from net against par: two for net par, three for a net birdie, one for a net bogey, nothing for worse. Parful scores Stableford with exactly this arithmetic.

When it does not apply

  • Points are always computed from NET score, never from gross.
  • A blank hole scores nothing and is not counted. Enter a pickup as the net-double-bogey score for the hole and it will score zero points, as it should.
  • Parful applies 100% allowance to individual Stableford. Change it if your club uses 95%.

Questions

What is playing to my handicap?

Thirty-six points over eighteen holes, eighteen over nine. Two points on every hole is net par everywhere.

Can I pick up on a bad hole?

Yes. Once you cannot score a point (net double bogey or worse) the hole is worth zero whatever you finally take, so pick up and move on.

What are the modified and par/bogey tables?

Modified Stableford rewards attacking golf: 8 for a net albatross, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, nothing for par and minus points for worse. Par/bogey is match play against the course, one point won, halved or lost per hole.
