How it was calculated
  1. 0 holes at par or better × 2 = 0
  2. 11 bogeys × 1 = 11
  3. 7 worse × 0 = 0; total 11 points
  4. 36 − 11 = 25; net = 100 − 25 = 75

Rule: system 36

Worked example

A card scoring 11 System 36 points gives a handicap of 25 and a net score of 75 from a gross of 100.

  1. 0 holes at par or better × 2 = 0
  2. 11 bogeys × 1 = 11
  3. 7 worse × 0 = 0; total 11 points
  4. 36 − 11 = 25; net = 100 − 25 = 75

How it is calculated

Score each hole: par or better is two points, a bogey is one, anything worse is nothing. Add them up and subtract from 36. A player who bogeys every hole scores 18 points and gets an 18 handicap. Net score is gross minus the handicap. Parful runs System 36 exactly this way.

When it does not apply

  • The handicap comes from the round just played, so it is only ever fair for that round.
  • A half-finished card gives a misleading handicap; System 36 needs the full eighteen.

Questions

Why 36?

Because two points on every hole is 36. A par golfer scores 36 and gets no handicap; a bogey golfer scores 18 and gets 18.

Is System 36 fair?

Fair enough for a fun day, and the easiest of the three guest-day systems to explain on the first tee. Callaway and Peoria are more robust against a single bad hole.
