Worked example

Six Peoria holes scoring 35 on a par-72 course give a handicap of 26, and a net score of 74 from a gross of 100.

  1. holes 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17: 5 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 35
  2. 35 × 3 = 105; − par 72 = 33
  3. × 80% = 26.4, rounds to 26
  4. net = 100 − 26 = 74

How it is calculated

Add the scores on the six drawn holes, each capped at double its par. Multiply by three to scale six holes to eighteen, subtract the course par, and take eighty percent. Round, and that is the handicap. The six holes must be chosen before anyone plays. On Parful they are drawn from the outing itself so nobody can pick them afterwards.

When it does not apply

  • The six holes are the whole integrity of the system. They must be fixed before play, not chosen from the cards.
  • Each drawn hole counts at most double par, so one disaster cannot hand out an enormous handicap.
  • A blank score on a drawn hole makes the result meaningless; the calculator will ask for it rather than guess.

Questions

How are the six holes chosen?

Before the round, by the organiser, and kept secret. Parful draws them from the outing record so the draw is settled the moment the outing exists and anyone can verify it afterwards.

What is Modified Peoria?

The same system with twelve holes instead of six, multiplied by 1.5 instead of 3. Parful runs the six-hole version.
