What does best 8 of 12 mean in a golf league?

Each player's eight best results from the twelve counting outings are added up and the other four are dropped. A player who played fewer than eight has every round counted.

Which rounds count as the best?

It depends on the standings: the highest points for an order of merit or Stableford league, the lowest totals for a net or gross aggregate. Parful reads the direction from the method.

Are dropped rounds deleted?

No. They stay on the player's ledger marked as outside the best N and can come back into the count if a later round is worse than they are.

Does best N apply to an eclectic or ringer?

No. The composite card already takes the best of every round on every hole, so there is nothing to drop and Parful ignores the setting for those methods.

Can a dropped round break a tie?

No. Parful's count-back and best single result tiebreakers read only the counting rounds.

Counting rounds, or best N of M, is the rule that a season standings keeps only each player's best N results out of the M outings played. The dropped rounds stay on the player's ledger marked as not counted; for aggregates the lowest N totals count and for points and Stableford standings the highest N count.

How counting rounds work

A club season might have twelve counting outings. Nobody plays all twelve, and a standings that simply adds everything up becomes an attendance table. Best N of M fixes that: each player's best N results count and the rest are dropped. Best 8 of 12 means a player can miss four outings, or play four badly, without cost.

The rule is applied per player at the moment the standings is computed. Every time an outing closes each player's rounds are re-sorted and the best N picked again, so a good round in November can push out a mediocre one from May. Nothing is ever permanently dropped; a round is only outside the best N until it is not.

A player with fewer than N rounds has every round counted and nothing dropped. The cap is a maximum, not a requirement, though in an aggregate a player short of N rounds ranks below players who have reached it.

Which rounds are the best

Best depends on the standings method, and Parful reads the direction from the method rather than asking the admin.

Points standings (order of merit): the N rounds with the most points count. Each round's points include placement, participation, multiplier and skill-prize adjustments, so the comparison is on final points per outing.
Stableford league: the N rounds with the most Stableford points count.
Net aggregate and gross aggregate: the N rounds with the lowest totals count, and the number of rounds counted is stamped on the row because the aggregate ranks rounds counted before total.
Eclectic and ringer: counting rounds does not apply. The composite card already takes the best score on every hole from every round, so there is nothing to drop.

What a dropped round looks like

A dropped round is not deleted. On a points standings each player's ledger lists every counting outing with its finishing position, field size, base points and adjustments, and each line carries a counted flag. Lines outside the best N are marked not counted with the reason "Outside best N rounds", and the total is recomputed from the counted lines only.

The rounds played figure still reports every round the player contributed, so a row can read eight rounds played, six counted. On Stableford and aggregate standings the per-round breakdown shows every round and the total is the sum of the counting ones.

How Parful runs it

Counting rounds is a single number on the standings settings. Leave it empty and every round counts; set it to 8 and each player's best eight count. It applies to points, Stableford, net aggregate and gross aggregate standings and is ignored by eclectic and ringer. The number is not frozen with an outing, so changing it mid-season recomputes the whole table under the new cap.

Tiebreakers respect the cap. Count-back compares only the counting rounds, best against best, and best single result reads the best counting round, so a dropped round cannot decide a tie either.

A worked example: a points standings, best 4 of 6

Vera plays all six outings of a season with a best-four cap. Her ledger shows the final points for each round and which ones count.

Counting total: 65 + 105 + 35 + 85 = 290. Rounds played 6, rounds counted 4. The 20 and the 5 stay on the ledger.

If Vera finishes fourth in September for 55 points, the 35 from June drops out and her total becomes 65 + 105 + 55 + 85 = 310.
On Jul 5 Vera attended but did not post a score, so she earned the 5 participation points only. With no participation points configured that line would not appear at all.
