Game facts: putts, fairways, bunkers, penalties and hole events

Also called Game facts, Game info, Putts and fairways, Fact records.

Game facts are what happened on a hole beyond the score: putts, fairway hit or missed, a bunker, penalty strokes, and the hole calls for first on the green, closest once all are on, first in the hole and who took the Snake. Parful captures each fact once on the group scorecard and every game reads the same record.

Player facts
Putts (0 to 12), fairway hit or miss, bunker yes or no, penalty strokes (0 to 9)
Hole facts
First on green, closest once all on, first holed, took the Snake
Stored
Once per fact, per hole, per group; a re-entry overwrites
Order
Strokes first; putts can never exceed the gross
Never blocks
Score entry or Next Hole
Derived, not stored
Green in regulation (gross minus putts)

What a fact is

A score says how many strokes a player took. A fact says something about how. Three putts, a missed fairway, a visit to a bunker, a ball in the water. Side games live on facts: Fewest Putts needs putts, Snake needs three-putts, Trouble needs bunkers and penalties, Arnies and Fairways and Greens need fairways, Bingo Bango Bongo needs to know who was first on the green.

Parful separates a fact from a decision. A fact happened in the golf and everyone in the group saw it. A decision is something a player chose, such as a Wolf partner, a press or a banked score. Facts live in the outing's fact records; decisions live on the game.

The fact types

There are two scopes. A player fact has a value for each player on the hole and is entered on that player's Game info line under their score. A hole fact names one player for the whole hole and is entered once in the shared GAMES section at the bottom of the hole.

  • Putts: a whole number from 0 to 12, and never more than the player's gross strokes on the hole.
  • Fairway: hit or miss. Only asked on holes where a game needs it.
  • Bunker: yes or no, meaning the player was in a bunker on the hole.
  • Penalty: the number of penalty strokes on the hole, 0 to 9. The count, not the reason.
  • First on green: the one player whose ball was on the putting surface first. Feeds the Bingo point.
  • Closest once all on: the one player nearest the hole once every ball was on the green. Feeds the Bango point.
  • First holed: the one player who holed out first. Feeds the Bongo point.
  • Took the Snake: asked only when more than one player three-putted the same hole, because putt totals cannot say who holds the Snake.

Ask once, store once, use many times

One logical fact exists once. If Steven had two putts on the 7th in group 3, there is a single record for putts on hole 7 in group 3, and it carries every player in the group. Fewest Putts, Snake, Trouble and Fairways and Greens all read that one record. The record's identity is its type, hole and group, so a scorer who re-enters a value overwrites the old one; contradictory duplicates cannot pile up.

A hole fact names exactly one player, so two people cannot both be first on the green. On the card the hole call is a row of player chips where choosing one deselects the last.

Green in regulation is never entered. Parful derives it from gross strokes minus putts: if the strokes to reach the green are two or more under par, it was a green in regulation. If putts are missing the answer is unknown rather than no, and a picked-up hole never receives a guessed value.

Strokes first, then facts

The scorer enters the strokes for the hole before any player fact. Until a player's gross exists their Game info line is disabled with an Enter strokes first hint, and once it does the putts stepper stops at that gross. A pickup stores the hole's cap as its gross and putts are checked against the cap. The rule was ratified after a live round in which players entered more putts than strokes, which is also why fact controls are round and blue and look nothing like the stroke stepper.

Hole calls such as first on green are not gated, because they are observed before anyone has holed out.

Facts never block score entry or moving to the next hole. A missing fact shows as a quiet count, Game info missing on holes 4 and 9, and the game simply cannot decide those holes until the fact arrives. Correcting a fact later reruns every game that reads it.

How Parful runs it

When a group has no active games the scorecard shows no fact controls at all. Start a game and the card asks only for the facts that game needs, on the holes it needs them: Fewest Putts adds a putts stepper, Trouble adds bunker and penalty, Bingo Bango Bongo adds the three hole calls. Two games that need the same fact share the same control.

Every fact write recomputes the games that depend on it, so standings are live, and each game's hole-by-hole breakdown shows the facts it consumed.

Worked example

A worked example: one hole, four players, three games

Hole 7 is a par 4. The group is playing Fewest Putts, Trouble and Bingo Bango Bongo. Strokes are entered first; then the facts each game needs.

PlayerGrossPuttsBunkerPenaltyGIR (derived)Trouble pointsHole calls
Ana42No04 minus 2 is 2, yes0First on green
Ben52Yes05 minus 2 is 3, no1 (bunker)Closest once all on
Cal63No16 minus 3 is 3, no2 (three-putt 1, penalty 1)
Dee41No04 minus 1 is 3, no0First holed
Eight facts on one hole, entered once: four putts values in one record, four bunker values in one, four penalty values in one, and three hole calls each naming one player.
  • Cal's putts stepper stopped at 6 because Cal's gross was 6; a scorer could not have entered 7.
  • Fewest Putts reads the same putts record as Trouble; nobody entered putts twice.

Common variants

Legacy per-game putts
Before the shared fact store, Fewest Putts kept its own putts on the game. Those records still fill gaps, and the shared record wins whenever both exist.
Casual sandies
The Sandies pool can count any bunker recovery rather than only a bunker followed by par or better. It reads the same bunker fact; only the rule changes.
Measured contests
Closest to the pin and long drive are measured contests recorded by the organizer, not facts on the group card. Greenies and Dots read the contest results.

Game facts: putts, fairways, bunkers, penalties and hole events questions

Do I have to enter putts for every player?

Only when a game in the group needs them, and only on the holes it needs. With no active games the scorecard shows no fact controls. Missing facts never stop you entering scores or moving to the next hole.

Why can't I enter putts before the score?

Putts are part of the gross, so the strokes go in first and the putts stepper stops at that number. This stops the mistake where a player logs more putts than strokes.

Where is green in regulation entered?

Nowhere. Parful derives it from gross strokes minus putts against par. If putts are missing the answer is unknown, never a guess.

What if two players three-putt the same hole in Snake?

The card asks who took the Snake last and stores the answer as a hole fact. Putt totals cannot say who holds it and Parful never derives that from entry order.

If I correct a fact, do the games update?

Yes. Every game that reads that fact is recomputed from hole one and the standings on the scorecard change straight away.
