A qualifier bracket handles a knockout field that is not a power of two by playing a preliminary round for some of the main draw slots. Direct entries plus qualifier winners plus any byes equal the main bracket size, so a 12-player field becomes 4 direct entries and 4 qualifier matches feeding an 8 draw.

Why qualifiers exist
A knockout bracket has 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 slots. Fields rarely cooperate. A club singles with 12 entries either wastes 4 slots of a 16 draw as byes or leaves 4 players out of an 8 draw. A qualifier bracket takes the second draw and fills the missing places with a preliminary round: some players go straight into the main draw and the rest play for the remaining slots.
Preliminaries are the golf-correct answer when the field is just over a power of two. Seventeen players means one preliminary match between two players for the sixteenth slot; giving 15 byes instead would make round 1 almost meaningless.
The formula
Call the field F, the main bracket size N, the number of direct entries K and the number of qualifier matches Q. The rule that holds the bracket together is that direct entries plus qualifier winners plus byes fill the main draw exactly: K + Q + byes = N. The players who are not direct entries form the qualifier pool of F minus K, and each qualifier match takes two of them.
Parful's recommended layout picks N as the largest power of two at or below the field and K as 2N minus F, which is the smallest number of direct entries that leaves no qualifier byes at all. The admin can then move the numbers: more direct entries and fewer qualifier matches, or a bigger main draw with byes.
- 17 players: N = 16, K = 32 minus 17 = 15 direct entries, Q = 1 qualifier match, pool of 2.
- 12 players: N = 8, K = 16 minus 12 = 4 direct entries, Q = 4 qualifier matches, pool of 8.
- 11 players: N = 8, K = 5 direct entries, Q = 3 qualifier matches, pool of 6.
Seeding direct entries and the pool
Direct entries fill seeds 1 to K of the main draw, by handicap (lowest first) or at random, placed in the standard seeded order so seeds 1 and 2 land in opposite halves. Qualifier winners fill seeds K + 1 to N in qualifier match order, so the winner of Qualifier 1 becomes seed K + 1 and meets a high seed in round 1. The admin can drag any entry or placeholder into any slot.
The pool is seeded the same way: by handicap the lowest qualifier meets the highest in Qualifier 1 and so on inward, random shuffles then pairs in order, manual lets the admin place names. A qualifier bye, when the pool is short, auto-advances that player into the bound main draw slot.
How Parful runs it
The Bracket Builder on a club knockout shows the recommended N and K for the field, lets the admin adjust them, validates that direct entries plus qualifier assignments plus placed byes equal the bracket size, and refuses to finalize while any slot is unfilled. Each flight builds independently. Qualifier matches sit in a preliminary round ahead of Round 1, and each winner drops into the main draw slot the builder bound it to.
Until the first qualifier or round 1 match has a result the admin can edit the layout freely and the bracket is rebuilt; after that it is locked. A withdrawn direct entry frees its slot for a substitute or becomes a round 1 bye; a withdrawn qualifier player gets a substitute or hands the match to the remaining player. Qualifier losers leave the competition and do not drop into a losers bracket, even when double elimination is on.
Worked example
A worked example: 12 players into an 8 draw
Twelve entries seeded by Course Handicap™. N = 8, K = 16 minus 12 = 4 direct entries (seeds 1 to 4), so the pool is seeds 5 to 12 playing 4 qualifier matches paired lowest against highest. Qualifier winners take seeds 5 to 8 and meet the direct entries in round 1.

- The alternative for 12 is a 16 draw with 4 byes to seeds 1 to 4. Parful's bye recommendation prefers that for 12 because 4 byes affect fewer players than 8 preliminary players; the qualifier layout is the choice for a club that wants every round played.
- Had only 11 entered, K would be 5 and the pool of 6 would fill 3 qualifier matches with no byes.
Common variants
- Byes instead of qualifiers
- Use the next power of two and give the top seeds a free first round. Parful offers both and recommends whichever touches fewer players.
- Stroke play qualifying
- A qualifying medal seeds the match play draw, the classic amateur championship shape. Parful seeds by handicap, random or manual; seeding direct entries from a qualifying score is not built.
- Multi-round qualifying
- A hundred players cut to fifty, then twenty-five, then the draw. Parful runs one qualifier round only; larger fields use byes for the remainder.
- Consolation for qualifier losers
- Some clubs give the preliminary losers a plate. Parful does not; qualifier losers exit the competition.
