Rule: club maximum course handicap

Worked example

A handicap index of 34.6 from a tee with a slope of 132, a course rating of 72.2 and a par of 72 is a course handicap of 41, capped at the club maximum of 28, giving a playing handicap of 21 at 75%.

  1. 34.6 × (132 ÷ 113) = 40.418
  2. 40.418 + (72.2 − 72) = 40.618
  3. rounds to 41
  4. 41 is above the club maximum of 28, so plays as 28
  5. 28 × 75% = 21, rounds to 21

How it is calculated

Convert the index to a Course Handicap for the tee. If it exceeds the club maximum, it plays as the maximum. THEN the format allowance is applied to the capped number. A cap of 30 on a player off 38 at 75% is 30 × 0.75 = 23 strokes, not 29. Applying the allowance first would let the cap bind on the wrong number. Plus handicaps are never capped. This is the order Parful applies.

When it does not apply

  • The cap applies to the Course Handicap, before the allowance. That is the only order in which it actually binds.
  • Plus handicaps are never capped.
  • The default is no cap. Only a club that has set one in its competition rules applies it.

Questions

Why cap at all?

To keep very high handicaps from dominating net competitions with a single hot round. Many clubs cap at 28 or 30 for board competitions.

Cap first or allowance first?

Cap first, always. Otherwise a 75% allowance on 38 gives 29, above a cap of 28, and the cap would then have to bind again.
